Approaches to and Tools for Project Performance Tracking and Analysis

Performance optimization begins with performance data collection. To identify and
prioritize performance problems, it is important to collect data from production
runs and on the complete workflow (‘end-to-end’). As many factors can influence
performance, multiple views of performance from the application code and from the
system must be correlated and merged (‘holistic’). SUPER is identifying and further
developing tools and methodologies for collecting end-to-end and holistic
performance data. An example is presented of using such data to quantify the impact
and identify possible sources of performance variability in production runs of the
Community Earth System Model.
